Numismatics Comes to Garden School

Numismatics at Garden Dr. Marinescu, a Doctor of Philosophy of Greek and Roman History, came to talk to the fourth and fifth graders about numismatics, the study of coins. He is th curator at Fortuna Fine Arts, LTD, which is located on Madison Avenue in Manhattan where he specializes in antiquities, both ancient Greek and Roman art.

Dr. Marinescu brought a large selection of antique coins from Athens and Rome. As he passed the gold and silver coins around the room, the students were able to use a magnifying glass to examine the details. Dr. Marinescu explained the process of how these coins were created. Alex Marinescu, his son and a Garden senior, took photographs of wide eyed students thinking about people who used these coins in the year 600 B.C. Finally everyone received a coin auction catalog to take home and marvel at other beautiful coins.
